Each week we will meet a different rabbi or Jewish educator from the community, who will share with us from their wisdom. Join us for a challah and a vibrant teaching and discussion. Gems at the J – Israeli Dancing with Don Schillinger

Instructor: Don Schillinger, Philadelphia area Israeli Dance Teacher. The pace of classes will be suitable for novices, people with limited experience, and even people with 2 left feet! Don will provide step by step instruction for the dances while you enjoy moving to Israeli rhythms. Don’t feel like dancing but love Israeli music, you can still come out and join the fun!!teaching and discussion. Gems at the J – Art Appreciation: Feasts! Food in Art from Bruegel to Thiebaud with Lynn Berkowitz

Instructor: Lynn Berkowitz, MFA, BFA. This art appreciation course explores still life, genre, and super-sized installation depictions of food, meal prep, and dining by artists as varied as Arcimboldo, Cézanne, Matisse, and Judy Chicago. Featuring ravishing details that range from the symbolic to the social, our discussion centers on an array of artists, ‘isms, media, and scale that dramatically connects our understanding of eating rituals from the past to the present. Refreshments will be paired with the subjects of the artwork being discussed.

Gems at the J – Jewish Broadway with Leila Joffe

Instructor: Leila Joffe, MFA American Conservatory Theater. AFTRA, SAG, Actors Equity. We will explore in depth the following musicals: Fiddler on the Roof, Cabaret, Ragtime, Funny Girl, and Parade. These musicals deal with the struggles of being Jewish in a world where you are the minority. We will discuss antisemitism, assimilation, and a longing for acceptance in a Broadway context.

Gems at the J – Current Events with Lisa Longo

Instructor: Lisa Longo, Kaiserman JCC Controller. Lisa is a former School Board President of Phoenixville Area School District, Sr Data Analyst for Obama for America and served on the Biden Public Education Policy Committee. Together with Lisa we will delve into the headlines of the latest newspaper articles and news broadcasts! Lisa will help guide us through current events and evaluate different viewpoints. We will also sharpen our thinking skills by solving newspaper puzzles.
