Dear Friends,
Gems has recently relaunched a program to bring engaging social and cultural activities to residents in Federation Housing. Federation Housing provides much-needed affordable housing communities and services that empower low-and-moderate-income seniors to live independently and with an enhanced quality of life. If you are interested in learning more about this incredible program, please find more information here.
In my role as the Gems Program Coordinator for the Samuel A. Green, Goldstein, and Sidewater Federation Housing locations, I am driven by a deep passion for working with aging communities. My focus is on fostering a welcoming and educational environment in all our hosted programs.
On Tuesday, February 27th, we hosted a remarkable Black History Month Recognition party at the Federation Housing, Samuel A. Green House. We had the pleasure of welcoming 20 residents and visitors to this event. The attendees were greeted with historically significant treats and their origin stories, including Banana pudding, rooted in West Africa, and watermelon (juice), with origins in Kenya, Ethiopia, and Libya.
The highlight of the event was the screening of “Summer of Soul,” a documentary that illuminates The Harlem Cultural Music Festival’s true story. This film not only celebrated the significance of African American history but also highlighted the healing power of soul music. Following the screening, one of our residents took the initiative to read aloud a piece by Maya Angelou, leaving all attendees moved and grateful for the program.
Our ongoing engagement with older adults, many of whom are immigrants, is central to our mission. We are committed to creating an inclusive and enriching experience for all participants.
If you have any questions about our programming, want to get involved, or would like more information, feel free to reach out through email: sparker@phillyjcc.com.
Shabbat Shalom,
Sydney Parker
